Is potty training regression normal?

boy potty training accident

Potty training: the holy grail of parenting, am I right?

The start of independence, the moment you can finally say goodbye to the nappy era. But what happens when your little one, who you thought was well and truly potty-trained, starts having accidents again? It's a scenario that can send even the most chilled-out parents into a tailspin but fear not, because potty training regression is completely normal.

First things first, let's address the elephant in the room. Potty regression can happen for a whole host of reasons; a new sibling on the scene, starting school, moving house or even an illness can all contribute. Change can be tough for little ones, and potty training is no exception. But it's important to remember that this is just a temporary setback and that, with a little patience and encouragement, your child will be back in the potty training game in no time.

So, what can you do to make the transition a little easier? Firstly, don't panic. I know, I know, it's easier said than done, but adding stress to the situation is only going to make things worse. Instead, have a chat with your little one and find out how they're feeling about the regression. They may be a bit upset or confused and a little reassurance can go a long way. Secondly, prepare for the worst (but hope for the best). Stock up on PeapodMats for the sofa, have extra cleaning supplies on hand, and make sure you've got a steady supply of spare underwear.

If your child has been potty trained for a while and the regression persists, it might be worth taking them to the GP to rule out any underlying medical issues, such as constipation or urinary infections. And, if your little one has recently moved to a new home, it's important to make the new toilet as familiar as possible. This could mean going to the toilet together for a few days or placing a favourite toy or a poster in the bathroom to make it feel more inviting.

Trust me, potty regression is completely normal and nothing to be worried about. It's a temporary setback that can happen for a variety of reasons. With a little patience, preparation and a dash of reassurance, your little one will be back in the potty training game in no time. Oh, don't forget the PeapodMats for peace of mind!
