What is a potty training regression

girl on a potty with PeapodMat

Potty training regression is a term used to describe a child who has successfully been potty trained, but then regresses and starts having accidents again. This can be a frustrating and confusing experience for you as a parent and your child, and it's important to understand the causes and how to address it.

One of the most common causes of potty regression is stress or change. Children may have a hard time adjusting to a new sibling, starting daycare or school, or even a move to a new house. Moving to a new home usually means that the toilet is not in the same place or there is no downstairs toilet any more. All these changes can disrupt a child's routine and make it harder for your child to remember to use the toilet.

Another cause of potty regression might be illness or a physical change. Children who have been potty-trained may have accidents if they are constipated, have a urinary tract infection, or are going through potty training too quickly.

In addition, some children may experience potty regression as a way to assert their independence. At this stage, children are trying to find their place in the world and may feel they are losing control in other areas of their life. Potty training can be a way for them to assert control and gain back some power.

So, what can you do to address the potty regression? The first step, as hard as it might seem at times, is to be patient and understanding. Potty regression is a normal part of child development and it's important not to scold or punish your child for accidents.

Next, it's essential to establish a routine and stick to it. Children thrive on routine and consistency, and it can help them feel more in control. You can also encourage your child to take responsibility for their accidents by having them help clean up or change clothes.

You could also try talking with your child to try to find out if there is something you don't know about that might be causing the regression.

Potty regression is a perfectly normal part of child development and it can happen for a variety of reasons. However frustrating the situation might be, you should always try your best to be patient and understanding. With a positive attitude and support, your child can overcome potty regression and regain their potty training skills in no time!
