How to sleep with allergies

girl sleeping on grass

Dealing with allergies can be a real pain, especially when you're trying to get some shut-eye! All that sneezing, congestion and itching can seriously mess up your sleep schedule. Not only can allergies wreak havoc on your sleep, but also leave you feeling tired, irritable and unable to function at your best. Fortunately, there are some simple tricks you can try to sleep better with allergies!

So, how to sleep with allergies?

1. Keep your bedroom clean. It is crucial to reducing your exposure to allergens like dust, pet dander and pollen. Make sure you give your room a good tidy-up regularly to get rid of any dust mites, pollen or pet dander. Clean your bed frame, headboard and nightstand and wash your bedding in hot water at least once a week.

2. Invest in air purifier. Using an air purifier in your bedroom is an effective way to improve your sleep quality with allergies. An air purifier is great for getting rid of those pesky allergens in the air, reducing your allergy symptoms and improving the overall air quality in your bedroom. Look for a purifier with a HEPA filter, which can trap even the tiniest particles and pollutants.

3. Get anti-allergy bedding. It can make a huge difference in your sleep quality. Anti-allergy bedding is specifically made by using unti-dust mite coatings or is specifically designed to repel allergens and prevent them from accumulating in your pillows and duvets. It's usually bedding made from synthetic materials or tightly woven fabrics.

4. Get a reliable mattress protector. Protecting your mattress is crucial as it can be a breeding ground for dust mites. Cleaning the mattress is an exhausting task, especially if you have to do it repeatedly. It's worth noting that most mattress protectors contain PVC and phthalates, which have been linked to the development of asthma and allergies. PeapodMats are made from TPU which is a type of physical membrane which creates a barrier against dust mites over the covered surface. PeapodMats prevent dampness and the build-up of debris (such as skin cells and sweat) in your mattresses.

5. Keep pets out of your bed. As much as you love your furry friend, their dander can trigger allergies. But not only! Did you know that common allergens, like pollen and dust, can stick to your pet's fur? If your pet ends up in your bed, they can then transfer the allergens to your bedding.

6. Use a saline nasal spray. A quick squirt of a saline nasal spray can help clear your nasal passages and reduce inflammation. Use it before bedtime to breathe easily and catch some Z's!

7. Elevate your head. When you lie down, your allergy symptoms can sometimes get worse. Try putting an extra pillow under your head to raise it up a bit. This can help reduce congestion and make breathing easier.

8. Avoid allergens before bed. Try to stay away from allergens before bedtime. Keep your windows and doors shut during allergy season and avoid going outside when pollen counts are high. Shower before bed to wash away any allergens on your skin and hair.

Why are pollen allergies worse at night?

Do you sometimes feel like your pollen allergy intensifies at night? So is it true - is pollen actually higher at night? The answer is no. The pollen levels are usually highest in the early morning. So why are your pollen allergies worse at night? It might be because at night, you're adding indoor triggers to the mix. You're also lying down at night, which can make your congestion worse.

If you're struggling to find relief from your allergies, it may be time to consult with a doctor. They can help identify the specific allergens triggering your symptoms and recommend treatment options, such as medication or allergy shots, to help alleviate your symptoms.

So there you have it - some tips to help you sleep better with allergies. By following these simple tricks, you can reduce your allergy symptoms and get some well-deserved rest.

Wish we had found these a long time ago

We have been. using bed pads for years, but these are far better quality. We now have 2 and took the advice from the website, of popping them on top of the normal bed sheet and not underneath - saves extra washing of bed sheets on many a day.

Thank you for your fantastic review of PeapodMats, Julie! We really appreciate it.
