This can be especially helpful for little ones who might be a bit hesitant or unsure about the whole process. By observing their older sibling, they can learn about the process and develop an understanding of what is expected of them.

Secondly, older siblings can provide encouragement and support for their younger sibling during the potty training process. Potty training can be a daunting experience for little ones, and having an older sibling cheering them on and praising them for their accomplishments can make a big difference in their confidence and motivation. For example, if the younger sibling uses the potty successfully, the older sibling can give them a high-five or a hug, which can make the experience more positive and fun for the younger child.

Potty training can be a real hands-on experience, and older siblings can help with picking out appropriate clothing for their little brother or sister and reminding them to use the toilet. I remember when I started potty training my third child, he was always too busy to go to the toilet. He hated taking breaks from playing and ended up having accidents. Soon, he realised that his older brother and sister were taking breaks from playtime and were back in no time, as opposed to him having to get changed and cleaned, which was taking much longer. That of course was also making him angry. Within a few days, they were all taking 'toilet breaks' from playing and there were no more accidents!


Lastly, older siblings can be a great source of support for parents during the potty training process. They can keep an eye on the younger child, especially when the parents are busy with other tasks, and be responsible for reminding the younger child to use the toilet throughout the day.


I know that potty training can feel like a never-ending cycle of nappies and accidents, but involving older siblings in the process can make it a fun and positive experience for the entire family. Older siblings can act as role models, provide encouragement and support, assist in the practical aspects of potty training, and be a great source of support for parents.
