1. Hide your brooms! 🧹

In Norway, hide your brooms on Christmas Eve so the witches can't steal them and cause any mischief!

2. Christmas dinner at KFC. 🍗

Christmas is not an official holiday in Japan but since KFC launched an advert in 1974, it started a yearly tradition where families head to KFC for their Christmas dinner!

3. Krampus parade 😈

While most children associate Christmas with Santa Claus, children in Austria will be scared by people wearing terrifying masks on the streets. There's also a Krampus parade! If you haven't heard of Krampus before, it's an evil accomplice of St Nick who wanders the streets looking for naughty kids. 

4. Cobweb on the Christmas tree 🕸️

People in Ukraine are known for decorating their Christmas trees with cobwebs (no spiders involved). This tradition is taken from a legend of a poor widow who couldn't afford to decorate a tree for her children and the spider took pity on her and decorated the tree with cobwebs. 

5. Donald Duck 

Since 1960s people in Sweden plan their Christmas around the show where Donald Duck wishes everyone a Merry Christmas. Apparently, 40% of Swedish people still tune in to watch the show!

6. Hay on the table

In Poland, people put a little hay under the tablecloth. It's a symbol of Jesus being born in a manger.

7. Fried caterpillars 🐛

If you're ever in South Africa for Christmas, you might be surprised by the traditional dish! Everyone who eats a fried caterpillar is believed to have good luck in the following year! 

8. Put your roller skates on! We're going to the mass! ⛪

In Venezuela, roads are closed from 8 am so people can skate to an early mass.

9. Tió de Nadal - the Christmas log🪵

Tió de Nadal is an important part of the Catalan Christmas. It's a log with a bright happy face painted on it. From 8th December one has to look after the log and give it something to eat every day. People also cover it with blankets to keep the log warm. Children must take good care of the log so it will poop the gifts out on Christmas Eve.
