Why is my child wetting the bed at night?

While bedwetting can affect anyone, it's twice as common in boys than girls. Additionally, if both parents experienced bedwetting in childhood, their children have a 70% chance of experiencing it also. Other factors include:

• Stress and anxiety. If your child was dry at night, but then a big life event (like moving house, birth of a new sibling, or school anxiety) occurs, they may fall back into bedwetting. 
• Bladder development. Your child's bladder may still be growing to become large enough, and strong enough, to hold urine through the night.
• Medical conditions. Such conditions as ADHD, autism, or Down syndrome can cause prolonged bedwetting.

Bedwetting is a completely normal stage of a child's development. But as a guide, you should seek medical advice if:

• your child still wets the bed at 7 years old.
• your child starts wetting the bed after being dry for a few months.
• your child is very thirsty, experiences pain during urination, has pink or red urine, has hard stools.

😠❌ Although it can be frustrating, bedwetting, not stemming from a medical issue, doesn't pose any health risks. Remember that your support is very important to your child. They might feel guilty and experience low self-esteem if they are made to feel embarrassed about wetting the bed. 

🗣✅ Be open with your child. Try talking to them about the situation and ask how they feel about it. Sometimes a simple chat can be enough to solve the bedwetting problem! For example: a child can be scared to go to the toilet at night.

💧💕 Never punish your child for an accident, instead, reassure them that one day it will stop. Let your child be responsible if it's age-appropriate. They can put wet bedding and clothes in the washing machine and change their own bed.
