co-parenting and potty training

Embarking on the potty training journey as co-parents can present unique challenges and opportunities. While it's an important milestone in your child's development, it requires cooperation from both parents. So what are the DOs and DON'Ts to set your child up for success? 👇

potty training

DOs:

1. Communicate openly and effectively

Open communication is the cornerstone of successful co-parenting, especially during potty training. Discuss your strategies and timelines beforehand to ensure you're both on the same page. Regular check-ins to discuss progress are also vital for maintaining alignment and resolving any issues promptly.

2. Establish consistency

Agree on a consistent routine for bathroom breaks, rewards and strategies for accidents. Consistency should extend to both households, if applicable, to avoid confusion for your child. Consistent reinforcement of expectations and routines will help your child understand and adapt more quickly.

3. Lead by example

Children learn best by observation, so both parents should lead by example when it comes to using the potty/toilet. Show enthusiasm and positivity and don't be afraid to demonstrate the process yourselves! Seeing both parents actively involved and supportive will motivate your child.

4. Be patient and supportive

Potty training can be a challenging process, and setbacks are normal. Be patient with your child and each other and offer plenty of support and encouragement along the way. Celebrate small victories together and provide reassurance during setbacks. Remember, every child progresses at their own pace, so avoid comparing your child's journey to others'.

5. Celebrate milestones together

Whether it's successfully using the potty for the first time or staying dry throughout the night, acknowledge and praise your child's achievements together. Celebrating milestones together strengthens your co-parenting bond and boosts your child's confidence.

DON'Ts:

1. Don't undermine each other

Avoid undermining each other's efforts or contradicting instructions during potty training. Consistency is crucial, so presenting a united front will prevent confusion for your child. If you disagree on an approach or strategy, discuss it privately and come to a resolution together.

2. Don't place blame

Setbacks are inevitable during potty training, but placing blame on each other or your child is counterproductive. Instead of assigning fault, focus on problem-solving together.

3. Don't rush the process

Potty training is a developmental milestone that takes time and patience. Avoid rushing the process or putting undue pressure on your child. Pushing too hard can lead to resistance and setbacks. Instead, follow your child's cues and progress at a pace that's comfortable for them.

4. Don't neglect consistency

Consistency is mentioned again because it's that important. Consistency across both households, if applicable, is crucial for reinforcing potty training routines and expectations.

5. Don't forget to celebrate progress

In the midst of the potty training journey, it's easy to get caught up in the challenges and forget to celebrate progress. Remember to acknowledge and celebrate even small victories together as co-parents.

Potty training as co-parents requires teamwork, patience, and effective communication. By following these dos and don'ts, you can navigate this milestone with confidence and set your child up for success.

Wish we had found these a long time ago

We have been. using bed pads for years, but these are far better quality. We now have 2 and took the advice from the website, of popping them on top of the normal bed sheet and not underneath - saves extra washing of bed sheets on many a day.

Thank you for your fantastic review of PeapodMats, Julie! We really appreciate it.
